Kristin Grimshaw & Jessica Nicholson, Co-Founders of FRANQ Girl Magazine, are judges of the 2014 Clean Beauty Awards!
How did you first learn about potential harmful ingredients lurking in the beauty and personal care products?
[Kristin] When I started gathering content and exploring the internet for FRANQ GIRL I started to come across alarming information about the products my family is currently using.
[Jessica] I think I've always known, when I was growing up my mom was very anti establishment, we were not eating certain things like milk and meat and not using toxic products because of the harm they could cause our bodies, this was back in the 80's and 90's and was totally weird, now it seems more common.
What is one fact about the beauty industry that you always seem to share with others?
[Kristin] Most beauty products are being sold to us under the guise that we are not good enough and we need their products to be our best
[Jessica] Pictures are deceiving and perfection is not real, but perception is. Meaning that pictures show this idealized "perfection" but we only see those images as perfection because of mass perception.
What made you get involved with the Clean Beauty Awards?
[Kristin] I feel strongly that we all need to be educated about the chemicals we are using on our bodies daily and I wanted a chance to see if these amazing healthy products work
[Jessica] Because Jenise asked me =) and I wanted to find out about new clean and natural beauty products that work well.
What inspired you to create FRANQ Girl Magazine?
[Kristin] My Co-founder Jessica and I created Franq Girl Magazine because of our young daughters. When we looked at how girls are being represented in the media we were becoming increasing afraid for their futures. Franq Girl Magazine is the first TRUE beauty magazine for teen girls with the mission to empower teen girls by providing them aspiration content and imagery.
[Jessica] I was inspired to create FRANQ GIRL MAGAZINE because I have always had an overwhelming sense of "duty," that I needed to do something larger than myself that could impact the world, but my personal talents never seemed to lend themselves to anything of that nature. After I had my daughter Ruby I became more and more concerned about the state of media and how Girls are being represented, I know how it impacts on me and how I feel about myself and I wanted to lessen if not eradicate that for her. FRANQ GIRL was born of a desire for a better world for my daughter, and for all girls, and the perfect timing and culmination of my talents that could be applied in this time, and form.
What awesome projects/initiatives are you up to this year?
[Kristin & Jessica] We are launching our crowd funding campaign (Empowering All Teen Girls) on August 18th, which is super exciting! The premier issue of the Magazine launches this October. It's been a crazy 8 months!
What is your personal mantra/motto that keeps you inspired or motivated?
[Kristin] Take one day at a time.
[Jessica] To CHOOSE every situation I'm in at the moment, whether it is pleasant or not, good or bad, painful or happy, I choose it. It gives me my power back when I feel out of control.
What is one advice you would give to your younger self?
[Kristin] Perfection isn't real. Love yourself for you you are.
[Jessica] You are much more capable and intelligent than you and others believe. don't give up before you've started, and don't allow labels to dictate who and what you are.
